New Mexico Route 66 Special Interest License Plate Available Now!

Legal for Your Motor Vehicle

In the 2003 state legislative session, legislation proposed by NM Route 66 President Johnnie Meier was introduced by Representative Joseph Campos and Senator Pete Campos to authorize a special issue Route 66 license plate. The legislation was passed by the New Mexico legislature and subsequently signed by the Governor. The new plate is authorized as a legal registration plate for display on motor vehicles and is renewable yearly. The plates became available in the Spring of 2007.

The New Mexico Route 66 Association lead the design phase of the license plate and conducted a contest to create the best design. Well known Route 66 artists and the general public submitted proposed designs. Designs were judged by the New Mexico Council of Car Clubs without knowledge of the artist's identity. The New Mexico Council of Car Clubs is an organization representing about 30 car clubs and over 500 members.

The winning design was submitted by Bob Audette of Tijeras NM.

The 2003 Legislation directed the funds to the Scenic Byways Office at the Dept of Transportation where $25 of each plate will be allocated to a fund for the preservation of historic Route 66 sites in New Mexico.

The Special Issue Plate costs $37 in addition to the normal registration fee and is due yearly.

The Route 66 Special Issue Plate can be ordered by mail by filling out an application. The application, in PDF format, can be downloaded by clicking here
